Scrap Metal Types – Classification of Metals

In the metal recycling business, the scrap metal sources can be from the unused metal products, metal scrap or unused products from the production companies. The scrap metal types can be broadly classified into two types

Ferrous Metals
Non-Ferrous Metals

But, if you are learning or starting up into the scrap business of metal you got to know what these type of metals means, or if you ask what are the differences between ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals. So, let’s get some brief ideas on these two scrap metal types.

Ferrous Metals:

Combination of the metals with iron and carbon falls under the category of ferrous metals. As these metals have iron as part of their components, they tend to have a magnetic property. As a result of the presence of iron, these types of metals are resistive to the corrosion.
In the manufacturing of electrical motors and the other electrical appliances, the ferrous metal types and its alloys are generally used as a result of their magnetic characteristic.
Simple or basic identification of a metal to be of the ferrous metal category is the rust if it rusts it is ferrous metal. But, it's not the case in all types, for example, the stainless steel. Stainless steel is also a ferrous metal but due to the presence of chromium in large amount, it will resist the rust. The main reason behind the rust to the ferrous metals and the alloys of it is the usage of carbon in the production.

Ferrous metals have the iron as component. Therefore, they are generally heavy in weight.
These ferrous metals are used in many tools, building materials, cooking appliances, electrical appliances, constructions materials.

Some examples of ferrous metals are

Stainless Steel, Mild Steel, carbon steel, cast iron.

Non-Ferrous Metals:

As the definition of ferrous metal says that it is the composition of iron and other components, same as non-ferrous metals are the metals with no iron as a component or the presence of iron in the metal are very negligible. As a result, the absence of the iron components makes them different from the ferrous metal types.

As there is no iron present in these types of metals, they do not exhibit the magnetic properties and weighs lighter.

Due to their lighter weight characteristic, they are mainly used in the place of ferrous metal where weight reduction is the primary concern.

Non-magnetic characteristic brings the options upon ferrous metals in the production of electrical cables, or wirings.

Non-iron characteristic provides the ability to non-rust and higher resistance to the corrosion. Which will bring them in the creation or production of pipes used for water supply, sewage and other on
road signs?

Some of the non-ferrous metals are good conductors of heat and the electricity – for example, copper and aluminum.

Where to find scrap metal types and where to sell the metal scrap?

These metal scraps can be produced inhouse of steel mills and the production factories using iron and steel. It could be in the form of disapproved final products, extra trimmed and chipped metal. These materials often recycled at the same place without going to the junkyard or the metal recycling plants.

The other source of metal scrap is the old and unused products. It could be junk old products or end-of-life products, scrap vehicles, old big types of machinery non-functioning appliances, or from the construction sites, renovating sites or demolished sites.

You can find the scrap item lying in the backyard of your house, the railings, garden metal tables, and chairs. Any other gardening tools unusable can be converted into scrap and into the cash.
